Mayor Daley’s Online Alderman Search

by Rachel Hillis

Internet communication is the norm for most North Park Students, and if one thought their parents setting up a Facebook account was weird, start getting used to it. Mayor Daley is choosing the next Aldermen for the 1st and 29th wards through online applications that were due last Friday.

“This is an era of technology. And many a time, people communicate through various technologies. And why not? And you meet some interesting people. Besides that, you get some good ideas from them as you interview them,” said Daley to ABC 7 News.

According to cityofchicago.org, applicants must live in the ward for at least one year, owe no debts to the city, be registered to vote, and have a clean criminal record (especially regarding crime, bribery, and perjury). Applicants were also asked to include a cover letter, resume, and at least three letters of recommendation from community leaders, business leaders, or residents of the ward.

The alderman of the 1st ward, Manny Flores, resigned last month after Governor Pat Quinn appointed him as the new head of the Illinois Commerce Commission. The alderman of the 29th ward, Isaac Carothers, was charged with over $40,000 worth of bribery for zoning projects a few weeks ago. Mayor Daley has 60 days from the time of vacancy to appoint the new Aldermen.
